Summary
On November 3, 2020, there will be a special election to fill the rest of the 2017-2022 term that John McCain (R) was elected to in 2016. McCain died of cancer on August 25, 2018.[1] A primary is scheduled for August 4, 2020. The filing deadline for this election is April 6, 2020.[2][3]
On September 4, 2018, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R) announced that he would appoint former U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl (R) to replace McCain. Ducey’s office said Kyl would serve through at least the end of 2018 and that Ducey would appoint another replacement if Kyl chose to step down at that point.[1] Kyl said he would not run for the seat in the 2020 special election.[4]
On December 18, 2018, Ducey announced the appointment of Rep. Martha McSally (R) to the U.S. Senate to replace Kyl who resigned from the seat on December 31, 2018.[5] McSally is running in the election.
McSally will serve until the special election winner takes office in January 2021. The special election winner will serve until the 2022 general election winner (if a different person) takes office in January 2023.
